By now most people have heard that yoga can be extremely beneficial during pregnancy. In fact most prenatal care providers recommend expectant mothers seek out yoga to help address the myriad of discomforts that can arise during pregnancy. As a result, more and more pregnant women are seeking out their local yoga studios. And seeking out classes geared specifically to pregnant women taught by specially trained prenatal teachers. Wisdom Flow Studios offer Prenatal Yoga Wednesday mornings 10:30AM with Jill Adams.
Pregnancy has its own special brand of discomforts and challenges. Some of these aches and pains are due to the changing posture as baby grows and some of these discomforts come at the hands of changing levels of hormones in the body that can elicit physiological and emotional responses. Prenatal yoga classes offer poses and sequencing, breathing techniques and meditation that can address these issues and help provide relief and build strength and steady calm.
Probably the issue that is pressing for most pregnant mamas is low back pain, its pretty hard to avoid. As baby gets bigger and bigger, abdominal muscles lengthen and weaken. There is more load in the front, and strength is required to support the load in order to keep it out of the low back. If expectant mothers start yoga early in the pregnancy, deep abdominal muscles can be toned AS they stretch. Muscles are designed to be strong AND long. Your deepest abdominal muscles – the Transversus Abdominus – has fibers that run horizontally around the the low belly and low back. The Deep Core Muscles can contract to create a steady base UNDER the growing uterus without restricting expansion. Understanding this is the key to great Prenatal Yoga. Keeping the Transversus Abdominus strong during pregnancy takes a great deal of strain OFF the low back. Our prenatal class focuses on a strong core, toned pelvic floor and stretching and strengthening from positions that support mother’s alignment and baby’s comfort.
Our Prenatal teacher has lots of tricks up her sleeves for addressing issues like hip pain, sciatica, SI joint pain, swelling of the feet and nausea (all fun things a pregnant mama may deal with at some point). Our prenatal class will touch on things specific to what your body is currently going through and avoid poses that will aggravate them. You’ll find you leave a prenatal class feeling better, rather than worse, than when you came in.
