baskets-on-headIn nature-based communities people move much differently than in our sitting society.  Living outdoors in nature we  move in a wide variety of ways, walking, running, squatting, pulling, lifting;  we are interacting with the earth, trees, animals, using our core strength and stabilizing muscles.  In a sitting society, we interact with furniture; sofa, car seat, desk chair, dining chair, back to sofa.  Our core muscles grow weak and often hips and low back do not have the support they need to move in alignment.   Wednesdays and Fridays at Noon

sit-sofaPerhaps this is why hip replacements and spinal surgeries are on the rise in technocratic societies.   When we sit more than moving naturally, our stabilizing muscles grow weak and joint movement becomes sloppy and the spine gets more compression and less traction.  This leads to premature degeneration of joints and inter-vertebral discs.  With a bit of regular discipline, you can change this.  With a class like Feng Sui Fitness, you can rebuild the core stability to support joints and lengthen the spine.  As its name implies, this class helps build balanced strength and appropriate alignment.  HOUR of POWER Wednesdays and Fridays at Noon

Weights-no-faceIn this powerful hour we tone and strength the arms while keeping steady shoulder alignment and core support.  After stretching the arms and shoulders we move to the barre to work quads, inner thighs, and calves.  The heat of the thigh work is balanced with thigh and groin stretches before moving on to gluteal and hamstring strengthening.  Barre work with the pilates ball squeezed between calf and hamstring builds a strong posterior chain from heel to hip.   Wednesdays and Fridays at Noon

Barre-Yoga-ClassPigeon stretches release the outer hip muscles before we dive into core sequences that flatten the belly and build support for internal organs and major joints.  Abdominal muscles engage core support from the front body, paraspinals and gluteal muscles create core support in the back body.  We close with back strengthening before easing into supine spinal twists to close.  You will feel the five elements present in these sequences; the stabilizing earth energy of the leg and hip work, the flowing water element in the yoga, the fire of the abdominal strength, the air element of deep breath and clear intention, and the space element of moving into new possibility.
